Gingerbread – Another Sad Story

Many people asked me.. sorry to say but Gingerbread made no progress regarding RTL languages, probably no progress in internationalization at all.

UPDATE: HoneyComb too (thanks PapaDocta).

Google is busy hunting manufacturers and expanding Android adoption in tablets, and before that it was busy doing performance polishing in FroYo. I guess we, open-source guys in the middle east, are the only realistic source for a solution.

I’m saying again: anyone seeking to solve the problem of RTL languages in Android should upload his patches to Android’s Gerrit Code Review and insist on them being approved. This makes the change an immediately-available official work. Another good place is CyanogenMod’s Gerrit because CM is used as a basis for many mods.

  1. Google has indicated (well some of its core programmers) that they are not going to support Arabic not in Gingerbread nor Honeycomb! so this issue will remain open for a long time i guess..

hats off to Apple for supporting 55+ languages making the device an Intentional phone.. where ever you buy it it will support your language ..

  2. Google is geared by economic factors and Android is primarily sold in USA and Europe. They don’t care about internationalization at all.

In Israel private stores charge 80$ to bundle RTL in Android phones they sell. Guess what.. the RTL we get is buggy and imperfect! Cellular providers sell phones for 60% higher prices because they invest in bundling RTL languages (Arabic & Hebrew).

Apple is extremely restricted regarding openness, but what they provide is a rock-solid piece of product.

  3. that’s a rip off..$80!!

well the same story here but the difference is phones sold to the middle east are already bundled with Arabic from the source itself … HTC and Samsung both uses MobiDiv to do the RTL support for phones sold in the Middle East but the local stores are extremely greedy..

i’d buy a phone from the UK and with customs and shipping cost it still much cheaper than here which can be up to $200-$300 more than in the UK ..

well I hope you find the time to finish this project and i hope google will take it and integrate it into their future releases

    • Sure dude, I’ll try my best

I’m pushing the goal of having the work stock-available, making it maximally centralized. Remember that the current scheme of providing regional phone firmwares is a very negative approach, for example Samsung never released middle-eastern versions of their recent firmware versions for i7500 Galaxy… they’re stuck with Android 1.5 (!!).

    • Mmm I guess the best thing users can do is to test in real-life conditions and give any type of suggestions. The work isn’t complete yet to be incorporated in a mod.
BUT BiDi itself is ready (without Arabic reshaping). This can be tested but is only relevant for Hebrew because it is RTL and doesn’t require reshaping.

      • Although I’d love to help in every way … my native tongue is Arabic so I can help with Arabic testing … Also, y6b has a repository online that he used with cyanogen mod 5 and it looked decent, I wonder if it is any help to you
